Reading – We start our children off on their journey as readers using the Dandelion Launchers and Dandelion Readers and follow this up with the use of our own reading progression using Oxford Reading Tree, Floppy’s Phonics, Songbirds and Project X as our core. We offer other fiction, non-fiction, poems, plays etc, as extension reading.

Phonics – Throughout F/S 2 and Key Stage 1 there is a daily session of phonic teaching of 15 – 20 minutes. Phonic skills, knowledge and understanding are vital to learning to read and write and need to be taught consistently and effectively which we do through planning our own phonics teaching following our school phonics progression scheme.

Maths – We use the Power Maths Scheme of Work to ensure teaching progression and that our pupils develop confidence and mental fluency in all areas of mathematics.

Music – We use Charanga Music Curriculum to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

At Chellaston Infant School, Personal, Health and Social Education (PHSE) which includes Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught weekly through a planned programme of work that follows the Jigsaw PSHE programme – Jigsaw brings together PSHE education, Emotional Literacy, Social Skills and Spiritual Development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.

At Chellaston Infants we want to explore the big questions about life in order to find out what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. By engaging children in the systematic enquiry of these big questions using an enquiry-based approach, they will make sense of religion and world views, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. We use the Discovery Religious Education (RE) programme to support this learning.
